I believe in freedom. I believe in America. I believe in Opportunity Feminism.
While studying at the University of Virginia, I founded the Network of Enlightened Women, known as NeW, as an organization for conservative university women to provide an alternative to the liberal feminism I saw on campus. It turns out there were a lot of women who felt like modern feminism didn’t represent them. Since starting NeW in college, I have advocated for conservative public policy ideas and how they are best for women through writing, speaking, and organizing.
During more than a decade of speaking and debating on college and law school campuses, I noticed that many conservative women kept quiet, fearful that speaking out would impact not only their grades but also their social life. I edited a book sharing stories from women about their experiences as conservatives on campus, She’s Conservative: Stories of Trials and Triumphs on America’s College Campuses.
I wrote You’re Not Alone: The Conservative Woman’s Guide to College to prepare women for what they may face on campus. This book expanded NeW’s reach, provided a valuable resource for young women, and earned the Non-Fiction Book Awards (Silver Award), and the Independent Press Awards (Winner in Young Adult Non-Fiction.) This title received praise from some of the biggest stars in the conservative movement.
“I appreciate NeW ensuring that our next generation of young women are ready to take on the important challenges facing our nation and society. Reading this book is a great first step in setting yourself up for success as a conservative woman in a liberal world. Do not give up, and keep fighting for your values and faith!” – Marsha Blackburn, United States Senator
“I am excited about the next generation of women leaders the NeW community is lifting up. You have been through a lot. You are finding your strength. Continue to build on that strength and always remember the power of your voice. My hope is that this book empowers you to know you are meant for great things. We look forward to watching you shine!” – Ambassador Nikki R. Haley
“At a time when college campuses are saturated with liberal ideologies and free speech is treated as insignificant, Lips’s guide is an effective antidote to this plague of self-censorship, empowering young conservatives not to bend the knee to institutions that want to suppress their viewpoints.” – Peyton Sorosinski, Washington Examiner
I speak widely on Opportunity Feminism, which seeks to maximize freedom for women so they can build the lives they want to live. As part of Opportunity Feminism, NeW took on an occupational licensing issue and won. Ohio and Tennessee are two of a handful of states requiring lawyers to practice full-time to be eligible to be admitted without examination. Women make up a majority of voluntary part-time workers in our economy. NeW submitted a letter to the Supreme Court of Ohio and the Supreme Court of Tennessee asking for their rules to be amended. Both states removed their full-time work requirements.
I’ve written about NeW, conservative public policy ideas, feminism, and more in The Washington Post, Time Ideas, The Washington Examiner, Politico, National Review Online, Fox News, The Atlantic, The Boston Herald, and The News & Observer, and appeared on Fox News, CNN, and C-SPAN. I write regularly on equal pay and the gender wage gap, and in 2019, I testified before the Utah Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights on equal pay.
I host The Conservative Woman’s Guide podcast. From discussing conservative policy to speaking out across industries, I’m proud of this platform, which amplifies the voices of those standing up for pro-liberty values and inspires young women to speak up confidently as conservatives. Podcast guests include U.S. Representative Kat Cammack; Candace Cameron Bure, actress, and author; Anita McBride, former Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush; Dr. Colleen Shogan, the 11th Archivist of the United States; Jennifer Sey, author, national champion gymnast, and founder of XX-XY Athletics clothing brand; and Timothy Carney, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, among others.
After graduating from the University of Virginia and University of Virginia School of Law, I practiced law at Wiley Rein LLP in Washington, DC. During the Spring of 2016, I was a Resident Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics. I am a Senior Fellow with the Independent Women’s Forum. I wrote a rhyming board book for my children titled, “Coo Coo Coo.” You can find various content about my work, opportunity feminism, and motherhood on my Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Substack.
