Carly Gets It

This article originally appeared in US News & World Report.

After last night’s grueling three-hour Republican presidential debate, there was much spinning about who won, and that will continue today. The real winner? Women everywhere.

In addition to demonstrating knowledge across the spectrum of policy issues, Carly Fiorina showed how women candidates can successfully respond to a personal attack and resist the temptation to pander to women. She effectively said what women everywhere are thinking.

In a Rolling Stone piece published earlier this month, Donald Trump took a swipe at Fiorina’s appearance, and he hasn’t refuted the accuracy of the quote when given the opportunity. Here’s the exchange:

When the anchor throws to Carly Fiorina for her reaction to Trump’s momentum, Trump’s expression sours in schoolboy disgust as the camera bores in on Fiorina. ” Look at that face!” he cries. “Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president ?!” The laughter grows halting and faint behind him. “I mean, she’s a woman, and I’m not s’posedta say bad things, but really, folks, come on. Are we serious ?”

CNN’s Jake Tapper gave Fiorina a chance to respond to Trump’s comments at the debate. She succinctly responded, letting the comments speak for themselves: “I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.” It was a powerful moment.

Then, as the debate was winding down, Tapper asked, “Earlier this year, the Treasury Department announced that a woman will appear on the $10 bill. What woman would you like to see on the $10 bill?” Fiorina, the only woman on stage, responded by rejecting the premise of the need to change the $10 bill:

I wouldn’t change the $10 bill, or the $20 bill. I think, honesly, it’s a gesture. I don’t think it helps to change our history. What I wouold think is that we ought to recognize that women are not a special interest group. Women are the majority of this nation. We are half the potential of this nation, and this nation will be better off when every woman has the opportunity to live the life she chooses.

Fiorina gets it. Women aren’t a small, monolithic voting block to be pandered to. Women are a majority of voters. We need a dynamic economy that allows women to build fulfilling lives. That is what is important — not a political campaign to put the face of a woman on our $10 bill. Fiorina showed that she will resist the temptation to pander to women and instead focus on giving women the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
