Three Reasons Why Carly Fiorina Is A Smart VP Pick

The Republican primary is coming to a close. Businessman Donald Trump is pulling away with the lead. Last night, he swept the primaries, winning Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. It is no surprise that Texas Senator Ted Cruz is trying to win back the spotlight, which is no easy feat against Trump. He has won it today: Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate.
Here are three reasons why the former Hewlett-Packard CEO is a smart VP pick for Cruz.
She attacks opponents effectively
One of the most important roles of the Vice Presidential candidate during the election campaign is to serve as an attack dog. Fiorina has proven that she is effective attacker. During her campaign, she delivered some great lines against Former Secretary State Hillary Clinton such as, “Like Hillary Clinton, I too have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles around the globe. But unlike Hillary Clinton, I know that flying is an activity, not an accomplishment.”
Part of attacking well is knowing when to stop. Fiorina demonstrates that she understands this. At the second presidential debate, Fiorina’s first on the mainstage, CNN’s Jake Tapper gave her a chance to respond to Trump’s “Look at that face!” comment. Fiorina’s response? She declined to engage and simple let his comments speak. It worked.
The biggest obstacle facing Cruz right now is Trump. Having someone who can attack and hold back effectively is invaluable.
She handles the media
As the race heats up, so too does the media scrutiny. Some people crumble. Fiorina handled the media questions well during her presidential campaign. After the first debate, Fiorina appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews. Matthews repeatedly interrupted, challenged and pushed her. At the end, even Matthews admitted, “I see why you stood out tonight.” Watch the exchange.
She brings outsider experience
One of the biggest lessons of this campaign is that the American people are frustrated with Washington insiders and eager to shake things up in Washington. As much as Cruz wants to beat up on DC-types, he is running for President while serving as a Senator. Fiorina had a career outside of politics and even had it on the other side of the country. Fiorina makes a strong case for free market principles and government reform. This pick counters Trump’s narrative that he is the only outsider left and the only one with business experience.
It may be too late for Cruz. But Cruz has done something today that few challengers to Trump have done this election–winning the news cycle.
